Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly Mauvin Godinho disclosed that the National Highway Authority had accepted his proposal to construct a flyover in Cortalim in order to protect the houses of locals that would have to be demolished for the widening of the highway.
Speaking at a function in Margao, he said since Goa was a small State, instead of acquiring more land and demolishing local people’s houses, flyovers should be proposed wherever required. “The Centre has to accept the demand and construct the flyovers wherever they are required,” he said.
While the flyover at Cortalim junction is expected to cost around ` 100 crore, Mauvin has also recommended a flyover at Dabolim.
Meanwhile at a special meeting convened by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat of the MLAs representing the villages and towns through which the National Highways pass there was unanimity on the demand that Goans should not be asked to pay the toll for using the National highways.
Chief Minister disclosed that the Union Minister for Road Kamal Nath had promised him to consider this demand of Goa and see how best it can be fitted into the scheme of toll collection for highways.
The MLAs also demanded proper plans for the highway giving all the relevant details including the type of structure that would be demolished.
