The Forum for Rights of Children’s Education (FORCE) threatened to gherao ministers and MLAs from June onwards when the new academic year commences, if their demand for giving them freedom to chose the medium of instruction for their children is not met by then.
Stressing that their movement was neither political nor communal but only spurred by their determination to secure the future of their children, thousands of parents gathered at Lohia Maidan on Wednesday afternoon to make their point.
FORCE General Secretary Savio Lopes while declaring that parents’ patience is running out said that they have formulated a plan of action that will force the ministers and MLAs to come begging to them.
Accusing the government of backtracking on its promises, he said parents are willing to sacrifice anything for the future of their children and warned the government against thinking that the agitation will die out after some time.
Cynthia D’Costa took pains to clarify that those demanding English as a medium of instruction were not anti-nationals and questioned the nationality of those running English medium schools.
All the speakers had only one message to the government – Do not test the parents’ patience – besides also stating that the government cannot be trusted to honour its commitment.
