Former Dean and Head of the Faculty of Law at Delhi University Prof Ved Kumari has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Odisha (NLU Odisha).
Prof Kumari will take over from Prof Yogesh Pratap Singh, who was serving as Vice-Chancellor in charge since October last year, following the exit of Prof Srikrishna Deva Rao, who left to become Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Delhi.
As per reports, the Search Committee comprised Vice-Chancellor of Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University (RMNLU) Lucknow Prof SK Bhatnagar; NALSAR Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor Prof Faizan Mustafa; and former Supreme Court judge Justice AK Patnaik. This Committee recommended three names, including Prof Kumari’s, to the Chancellor.
Prof Kumari has over thirty five years of experience as an academician. She has served as Chairperson of the Delhi Judicial Academy and Professor-in-charge of DU’s Law Centre – I.
She was appointed as Dean of DU’s Law Faculty in September 2016. Following a turbulent stint, she resigned from the post in June 2019, citing administrative non-cooperation as the primary reason.
In 2017, protests erupted over students not being allowed to sit for exams for failing to meet the minimum attendance criteria, revaluation of exam papers, and other issues. Back then, Prof Kumari had complained that students had entered her office and threatened her with dire consequences.
