Panaji: Former Minister and Member of Parliament from North Goa, Prof. Gopalrao Mayekar, who was ailing for the last few days, died at the age of 87 on Thusday. He was admitted in the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim.
Prof. Mayekar was elected as an MLA from Mapusa on a Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) ticket in 1967 and was inducted as Minister for a brief period of time in the erstwhile Dayanand Bandodkar government. He was then elected as the North Goa MP on MGP ticket in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections.
Leader of the opposition Digambar Kamat, former Union Minister Ramakant Khalap and incumbent Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant have all condoled Mayekar’s passing. Kamat said that Prof. Mayekar will be remembered for his immense contribution to the welfare of the State and Khalap said that Prof. Mayekar’s death is a loss Marathi language and culture.
“Saddened by the passing away of Former State Minister, Former MP and writer Prof. Gopalrao Mayekar. His immense contribution to the public life will always be remembered. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family”, Sawant tweeted.
