In a surprising turn and indicating that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) is not going to be straddled around according to the personal dictates of some of the local Congress leaders, GoaChronicle.com has learnt through a senior AICC official who was part of the decision-making committee, that former Congress Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament John Fernandes has been finalised as the new Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President and the announcement for the same would be made as early as next week.
Interestingly a few days ago, Goa was rife with speculations through media that eight Congress MLAs from Goa had written a letter to the new Goa Desk-in-Charge Digvijay Singh demanding that former Calangute Congress MLA (better known as ‘Playboy MLA’ for his alliance with the first Playboy Club in India, Goa) be considered strongly for the role of the GPCC President.
Also a lobby for another former Congress Minister Alexio Sequeira was trying hard to ensure that he gets a green signal for the top post in the state. Another strong lobby was for former Home Minister Ravi Naik from the Hindu ‘Samaj’.
Former Congress MP Fernandes has been known to be very vocal on issues of Special Status and Mopa Airport in the state. Apparently, it was a strong decision of the Congress President and Vice-President that no defeated MLA would be appointed to the top post in the recent Goa Assembly Elections 2012.
