Four constables of the escort cell of Goa police, deputed at Sada sub jail in Vasco town near here, were today suspended for dereliction of duty in two different incidents related to undertrials, police said.
Two constables were suspended after a gangster Michael Fernandes, who had allegedly confessed to taking up “contract” to kill state Home Minister Ravi Naik’s son, fled from the judicial custody while on his way to medical check up on Tuesday evening, police said. Michael, arrested in September, 2010, made good the escape at Chicalim junction, 20 km from Panaji, by jumping from the window of a police escort van and disappearing on a motorcycle that followed the van while being transported to Goa Medical College, Bambolim, near here, officials said.
In another case, two others were suspended after a local television channel today showed them enjoying ice-cream at a city parlour with an under-trial in a murder case under the pretext of taking him for medical treatment, they said.
The under trial Balesh Desai, who is the first cousin of former BJP minister Ramrao Desai, was arrested in 2007 for killing his driver Samir Mapari. Deputy Superintendent of police (escort) N C Raikar told PTI that policemen’s involvement in letting the criminal enjoy under the pretext of medical treatment was a serious offence.
There are strict instructions that police escort cell teams should not take prisoners or under trials to any other place other than designated ones, he said. Police spokesman Atmaram Deshpande said the four constables have been placed under suspension pending inquiry
