Fr. Newton Rodrigues, the priest against whom the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Panjim has issued a non-bailable warrant, has apparently changed his name and according to Advocate Aires Rodrigues, the same is done to avoid service of the warrant of the court.
According to the official web site of the Catholic Diocese of Calgary, his name is shown as Antonio Joao Niwton Rodrigues, the priest attached to St. Bernadette’s Church.
While he was in Goa attached to the Archdiocese of Goa, he went by the name Fr. Newton Rodrigues.
Adv. Rodrigues who is charge sheeted by the Goa Police following a complaint lodged by Fr. Newton against him, alleged that the priest has changed his name to avoid the service of the warrant issued against him.
The warrant against Fr. Newton was issued following his consistent failure to turn up in the court where he is a material witness being the complainant in the case where 15 residents of Ribandar are facing trial.
Adv. Rodrigues said he would move the court to issue a warrant in the new name adopted by the priest so that the warrant can be served properly on him and he is made to appear in the court to depose.
