advertisementFr. Newton Rodrigues on Thursday moved an application before the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Panjim seeking to withdraw the complaint he had filed in 2004 against 15 parishioners of Ribandar where he was serving as a parish priest.
Currently the pastor of St. Bernadette Church at Calgary in Canada, Fr. Newton’s application was filed by Adv Amit Palekar representing him. As Adv. Aires Rodrigues, one of the accused in the case, vehemently opposed the objection, the matter is now fixed for arguments on the application on 30th June.
Adv. Rodrigues took strong exception to the contents of the application wherein Fr. Newton while asserting that the trespass had taken place, claimed to have forgiven Adv. Rodrigues and said that no suit for defamation or damages should be filed against him.
Adv. Rodrigues while declaring that he did not need anybody’s forgiveness assured the court that he would prove his innocence beyond any reasonable doubt and argued that the case should continue. He also referred to the ordeal the 15 accused including an aged widow had to undergo due to the complaint lodged by Fr. Newton.
Meanwhile, Police Sub-Inspector H L Hanshakutti who was cross examined in the matter admitted that a FIR was lodged at the Old Goa Police Station against Fr. Newton for molesting a minor girl.
