France prepares for more ‘Yellow Vests’ protests

Paris, Dec 15 (GCCurrentAffairs) French authorities mobilized thousands of police and gendarmerie in anticipation of new protest movements in the capital Paris and other cities for the fifth week in a row.

Paris Police chief said in a statement on Saturday that security measures would be similar to last week, where large-scale searches of people and vehicles would be carried out before the protests and mobile units of the riot police would deal with any outbreak of chaos.

However, tourist sites around the capital, including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, will open to visitors after it was closed last Saturday.

French President Emmanuel Macaron said on Friday that his country needs calm and order and return to normal work, stressing that mind and sense is for public good, should lead everyone to join the broader national dialogue promised to discuss a large number of public policies.

The French capital has been protesting by the so-called “yellow vests” for wearing it as a symbol, and the protests have turned into violence in the past three weeks.

Protesters initially raised demands to cancel planned increases in gasoline and diesel taxes, but were not satisfied when the government intervened to remedy the matter more than two weeks later.

After confrontations escalated between protesters and the security forces last Saturday, Macaron announced in a speech to his people on Monday a package of measures, including an additional amount for low-income workers and tax exemptions.
