Thane: Gandhari bridge in Kalyan town of the Thane district was closed with immediate effect after it developed cracks during a heavy downpour, a civic official said on Tuesday.
Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), Madhuri Phophale informed that the Gandhari bridge was in a dangerous condition and hence all types of traffic has been stopped on it till further notice she said.
Gandhari Bridge (also spelled as Gandhare Bridge) is located on the western outskirts of Kalyan City and build over the river Ulhas. It connects Kalyan West to Gandhare Village which is located on the opposite side of Ulhas Bhatsa Creek.
It is the only passage by which Kalyan connects to Mumbai-Agra road or NH3. Gandhari road which starts from Kalyan west passes through Bapgaon and Devrung villages and finally connects NH3 at Padgha check post.
While going to and coming from Nashik one often uses the Kalyan-Padgha-Nashik route and vice versa.
The bridge itself is nearly 20 years old.
