The issue of garbage management dominated the gram sabha of Goa Velha panchayat on Sunday and members criticized the body for showing lack of initiative in taking up proposals to evolve waste collection and disposal system in the village.
The meeting which was chaired by sarpanch Julie Cardozo, discussed among other issues, garbage disposal. Villagers pointed out that plastic and other waste were being dumped carelessly in the area behind the market.
A member drew the members’ attention to the model being pursued in another Tiswadi village and urged the panchayat to take up garbage management in view of the messy situation.
A panch Savio Monteiro said the dumping of garbage in public places should not be allowed. But some villagers pointed out that there was no suitable site for disposal. The sarpanch assured to look into the matter.
A villager also said that the benches near the market be shifted. It was further suggested that the open space be utilized to construct a basketball or volleyball court with floodlights.
The villagers also suggested that the nullahs behind the St Andrew’s church and another in St Francis vaddo be desilted as they had got buried after many years of siltation.
The budget for Goa Velha with some development proposals was also passed, but the issue of a long pending road in Saleri was raised at the meeting. The secretary said the file regarding the 150-metre road was not traceable and villagers asked him to locate it on priority. The estimates had been drawn up and no objection certificate from the land owner had been obtained.
