GBE organises ‘Duties and Responsibilities of Panchayat’

All the members of Chandor-Cavorim and Guirdolim villages elected for the first time to the village panchayat attended the workshop on “Duties and Responsibilities of the Panchayat” organized by Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott.

While former Sarpanch of Guirdolim Flavia Carvalho could not attend the workshop as she is out of station the only panch not to attend the workshop was Milagres Gonsalves who has been elected for a third term in Guirdolim.

The five panchas from Guirdolim who attended the workshop are Maura D’Costa, Agnelo Crasto, Vincie Peixoto, Sonia Dias and Balu Nistani while all the seven newly elected panchas of Chandor-Cavorim namely Etelvina Antao, Reve Furtado, Saturlina Fernandes, Lucia Coutinho, Marcelo Fernandes, Elizaberta D’Costa and Anthony Peixote attended the workshop.

Adv. Joe Antao, former Sarpanch of Guirdolim through his experience as the Sarpanch impressed upon the newly elected members the need to recognize their own standing and stand up for the village and its people even if it means opposing ministers in the government.

He also urged them to work together leaving aside differences of who was in whose panel so that the village can be developed.

Julio D’Silva while explaining the duties and responsibilities of the panchayat also gave examples of how the panchayat members can go off the beaten track to make a difference to the villagers. In a very educative power point presentation, he revealed how some functions of the panchayat have not been even touched by the previous bodies.

He also advised the panchayat members to read the Goa Panchayat Raj Act along with its rules to understand their responsibilities and duties and also to be prepared against manipulating and scheming secretaries.

While Domnic Mendes welcomed the gathering, Darwin Cardoso introduced the new panchas and Alzira Fernandes greeted them with flowers.

In his vote of thanks, Julio while assuring the panchayat members that Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott was willing to offer all help and support to the panchayats also cautioned that the organization will continue to be a watchdog to ensure that the interest of the village is protected at all times.
