Goa Assembly adjourned on issue of formalin in fish four times

Goa Legislative Assembly Monsoon Session of which started on Thursday, was adjourned for times on the issue of formalin in fish.

As soon as the Question Hour began, the Opposition MLAs, mostly from Congress and one from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) wanted discussion on formalin in fish issue but Speaker Pramod Sawant did not allow the discussion saying there was already calling attention on the issue. But the opposition stuck to it’s demand to have discussion.

When opposition members did not relent, Speaker announced adjournment of the house for 15 minutes.

Later when the House assembled, the Opposition MLAs continued with their demand to have discussion on formalin issue first while speaker wanted to have it after Question Hour. Seeing opposition not relenting on the issue, speaker announced adjournment of the House for 15 minutes again.

When the House assembled again the opposition members demanded the Speaker to have discussion on the issue. But the Speaker started reading obituary references. The opposition MLAs rushed to well of the House and this forced the Speaker to adjourn the House again for 15 minutes.

Later, when the House again assembled at around 1230 hrs, the opposition MLAs continued with demand. This forced the Speaker to adjourn the House till 1430 hrs.

Earlier, when the House had assembled, Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavlekar claimed that there two reports from Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on formalin in fish issue.

“If the government was serious, it must have discussion on the issue,” he said.
