The 72nd Independence Day of the country was celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour in the state on Wednesday.
The main state level function was held near Old Secretariat in the state capital where Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly Dr Pramod Sawant unfurled the national tri-colour and inspected the guard of honour at the state level.
On the occasion, the Speaker presented Presidents Police Medal for distinguished services to Superintendent of Police Dinraj R Govenker, Presidents Police medal for meritorious services to Retired Dy Superintendent of Police Ramesh Gaonkar, Police Inspector Sidhant Shirodkar and Police constable Zuber Momin on the occasion.
Addressing the people, the Speaker emphasised the need to maintain unity and peace prevailing in the state.
He said, “Goa is famous for its scenic beauty and peace across the globe. It is also known for its socio-cultural and communal harmony. Let us on this auspicious occasion vow to work in unison for the development of the state.”
Dr Sawant highlighted cleanliness in the state and said “it is one of the cores of our value system”.
He said in order to create healthy environment the state Government was endeavouring keeping in mind the ‘Swachh Bharat, Nital Goem’ mission.
The Government had also initiated significant steps to ban use of plastic and also for the proper disposal of garbage to get rid of the menace, he said and appealed to the people to supplement the efforts of the government for the protection of environment.
Extending greetings to the people of Goa on Independence Day Dr Sawant said though Goa attained liberation after 14 years of India’s Independence, the state had made substantial progress in varied sectors including health, education, tourism, information and technology and infrastructure development.
He also recalled the contribution of those who laid down their precious lives for the cause of India’s Independence.
