Goa Congress celebrates 74th birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi

The Congress in Goa celebrated 74th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Monday.

At a function organised by Panaji Block Congress Committee at Congress House in the city, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar recalled the sacrifices made by Rajiv Gandhi for the country and emphasised that all Congressmen should observe minimum discipline in their daily life because Rajiv ji always stressed on discipline in the party.

‘This discipline would help us to take the party further in achieving its goal,’ he said.

Former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat recalled how he was involved in a discussion process for giving powers to local self governing body which was organised at the instructions of Mr Gandhi.

Former MP Francisco Sardinha also highlighted contributions of the former Prime Minister for reservation of seats for women in local self governing body.

Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Chandrakant Kavlekar said,’Remembering on his birth anniversary will be fruitful only if all of us try to follow the principles which Rajiv ji upheld during his life time.’

Others who spoke included senior Congress leaders M K Shaikh, Shambhu Bhau Bandekar, Altinho Gomes, Vijay Bhike and Dr Joe Desouza.

Earlier, the party celebrated birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister at Rajiv Gandhi Medical Complex Bambolim near the city on Monday.

On the occasion, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar administered the Sadbhavana Day pledge.

Also present on the occasion were former Chief Ministers and present MLAs Luizinho Faleiro and Digambar Kamat, former MP Francisco Sardinha, senior Congress leaders Altinho Gomes, M K Shaikh, Dr Ulhas Parab, Savio De Souza, Vijay Pai, Vaman Chodankar, Janardhan Bhandari, former Panaji Mayor Surendra Furtado, South Goa District President Joe Dias and other party leaders.
