Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Sunday paid tributes to former Prime Minister Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee at a condolence meeting held at party state headquarter in the city.
After the floral tribute to the departed soul, GPCC President Girish Chodankar said the organisation of the meet itself explained what Congress was.
He said Congress President Rahul Gandhi was spreading love to counter hatred and that had prompted to organise the meet.
Chodankar said Vajapayee ji respected and recognised the contribution of Congress Prime Ministers and achievements and had grown above party line.
“He was liberal, democratic and had respected his opponents. He was truly a secular minded person which was evident at the time of Godhra riots wherein he advised his own Chief Minister not to discriminate on the basis of religion, castes etc and expected Narendra Modi (then Chief Minister of Gujarat) to abide by Raj Dharma,” the GPCC President said and appealed to the BJP leaders to emulate the qualities of Vajpayeeji in public life if they respected him which would be true tribute to him.
Chodankar said leaders like Vajapayee was very much needed in BJP today “which is out to divide Indian and destroy democratic institutions and crushing opposition.”
Former union Minister Ramakant Khalap recalled his association with Vajpayee and called him a great statesman.
Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavlekar said,”We should not bring religion and caste in public life and be fair to all.”
Former Union Minister Eduardo Faleiro in his message said,”Atal ji was an outstanding leader and admired and respected by all.”
