Goa Government to shift IIT location over people pressure

Panjim: The Goa Government on Friday announced that the proposed campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Shel Melauli village in Sattari in North Goa district will be shifted to another place in the state.

Speaking to reporters at his official in the city, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the government had decided to shift the project out of Sattari due to the opposition from locals.

“We respect the sentiments of people, which is why we have decided to shift the project out of Sattari,” he said. However, he added that the government was yet to decide on an alternative site.

The project had met with stiff opposition from locals. Recently, locals had staged a large-scale protest at the village saying that they would not part with their land for the project.

Last week, several villagers and a dozen of policemen were injured in a clash that took place in the forest area near Shel-Melaulim village.

The Chief Minister said cases filed against the protestors would be reviewed.
