The Goa Lokayukta on Monday issued direction that notices be served to former state chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar and two other officials following a complaint filed by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in connection with the alleged 1.44 lakh crore illegal mining scam.
In his order, Lokayukta P K Mishra said that notices be issued to former Mines Secretary P K Saini, Mines and Geology Department Director Prasanna Acharya and Mr Parsekar. The notices were returnabled by May 7.
Goa Foundation, an NGO, had last month approached the Lokayukta that the former chief minister along with two other officials had renewed 82 mining leases in contravention of Major Minerals Development and Regulation Act. Goa Foundation had filed a petition in the Supreme Court which had resulted in the apex court ordering cancellation of all the 88 mining leases in February this year.
The NGO had claimed that the hurriedly renewal of the leases had cost the state exchequer Rs 1.44 lakh.
However, Parsekar has maintained that nothing was done wrong when he was the chief minister and he had followed advice of the top officials who included Mines Secretary and Advocate General.
