Panaji: Taking a scathing attack to the Chief Minister of Goa, Dr Pramod Sawant, environmentalist Claude Alvares termed the Goa Mining Bill as a political bill.
Speaking to GoaChronicle, the Founder of Goa Foundation, expressed, “It’s not a great bill. The government declares one thing and goes on to do the complete opposite. The present board consists of the CM as chairperson, finance and mining secretaries; which is the same as the old board. They have added two CAs and a government appointed geologist but no one from the public or any environmental organisations. How is this any different? The closing of the department will be the first step to make this bill great.”
He further expressed his disappointment over the bill and feared that the state may yet again shy away from its sustainable promise. “
“This is a political bill because the CM already endorses mining in his private life. He is giving the leases to the old players again. To do something new, you have to induct new people. The same people will cause the same mess again. The CM has not even appointed any professional who is concerned with mining. Why is there no mining engineer or advisor? It’s a closed club of government servants which makes it a bad idea,” Claude elaborated further.
