Goa State Consumer Protection Council moot Consumer Cell in each department

Panaji Sep 6 (UNI) The Goa State Consumer Protection Council Meeting was held at the Seminar Hall, Secretariat, Porvorim, near the ctiy on Wednesday.

It was chaired by the Minister for Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Govind Gaude.
The meeting was also attended by the Secretary, (Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs), Rupesh Kumar Thakur, IAS, Convener of Goa CAN (Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network), Roland Martins, Amita Salatry, and members of the Consumer Conciliation Committee, Director of Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Sandhya Kamat and Assistant Director, Eshant Sawant.
Some of the prominent issues that were discussed at the meeting were related to key departments such as Electricity Department, Public Works Department, Department of Food and Drug Administration, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Traffic Police, Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Directorate of Higher Education, Health Services, Fisheries, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Department of Fire and Emergency Services among others.

Issues concerning the interests of consumers were discussed threadbare at the meeting. It was suggested that Government Departments should have a consumer cell headed by a nodal officer. Stress was also laid on creating awareness on the implementation of Right to Information Act, by conducting workshops. It was suggested that consumer protection laws should be publicized at local levels such as Municipalities and panchayats in coordination with the respective Departments.

Awareness on safety of food was one of the issues that was accorded importance. It was suggested that consumers should be given information with regards to the types of fish to be consumed in each season etc. Departments were also advised to issue advisories with regards to various issues pertaining to them so as to make the consumers aware.
