Post the election and up until last two weeks ago, AICC had been in strong favor to put a Catholic candidate as the GPCC president. This however changed during a last evening discussion by senior AICC leaders who felt that a Hindu leader would be most suitable to counter the BJP government and its party in the state.
GoaChronicle.com has learnt that former Home Minister Ravi Naik, who gained popularity on account of allegations of his son involvement in the drug nexus in Goa, is one of the main front runners. Naik had previously held the GPCC president in 2005.
Among other contenders is the former MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu, who is currently taken anticipatory bail against the FIR filed by the Goa government on illegal mining and Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik is the other contender.
