Goan at Olympics, But Not Representing ‘India’

Doing Goa proud but not India, Siona Fatima Fernandes – a girl of Goan-Indian origin will be competiting in the on-going London Olympics 2012 in Boxing. She however, will be representing New Zealand and not India in the fly-weight boxing category.

Fernandes had migrated to New Zealand only a few years ago and is now a citizen of New Zealand. She had represented Goa at the national level in Basketball during her college days. She was even selected for the Asian Games at one-point. However, her interest in boxing which turned to a passion was the driving force in her being selected to represent New Zealand.

Women’s Boxing is making its debut at the London Olympics. Mary Kom is the Indian competitor in the fly-weight category.

Goans across the globe have been talking about Fernandes’s participation at the Olympics in social networking sites and the proud moment of a Goans being at the Olympics.
