Goan beaches are likely to be no smoking zone with Miramar beach off Panjim being the first one. The Directorate of Health Services has submitted a proposal to make the Miramar beach a no smoking zone.
Being close to the capital city, Miramar beach attracts quite a number of visitors which include a substantial number of locals living in its vicinity. By virtue of being a relatively small beach, it is easier to manage and that is the reason why the no smoking at beaches is sought to be implemented here first.
Once, approved, smoking at the Miramar beach will be permitted only at the designated ‘smoking zone’ and anybody found smoking elsewhere will be fined. Currently, smoking in public places attracts a fine of 100.
Next on agenda is the extremely popular and one of Goa’s largest beaches, the Calangute beach. This beach is always crowded and converting it in to a smoke free zone will be quite a task. However, department officials are confident of taking on the challenge depending upon the result at Miramar.
