Government gives clearance for transferring Cipriano Custodial death case to CBI

The case of custodial death of Cipriano Fernandes at the Panjim police station which is being fought being Human Rights Activist Jowett D’Souza at the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court has finally got the Goa government’s clearance for a Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) probe into the matter.

Jowett D’Souza informed GoaChronicle.com that the law secretary has cleared the file and sent it to the Chief Secretary. The chief secretary has upheld the notings of the law secretary and has given clearance for the case to be handed over to CBI for further investigations.

Cipriano Fernandes died in police custody on January 9, 2011 and personnel of the police department especially the police inspector Sandesh Chodankar were allegedly responsible for the death.

Sources in the know say that the reason that the government has decided quite quickly to hand-over the case to CBI was because of the involvement of police officers and investigating officers probing the case are from the Goa police department. And in order to ensure a fair investigations keeping to norms of custodial death case under National Human Rights Commission that every custodial death issue must go to independent agency, the government decided to expedite the matter.
