Govt. Concedes Tribals’ Major Demands

Following the rail and rasta roko by the United Tribals Associations Alliance (UTAA), the government conceded some of their major demands following which the rail roko was lifted but the rasta roko continued to build pressure to concede the remaining demands.
Forest Minister Filipe Neri Rodrigues along with Chief Secretary Sanjay Srivastava held hectic parleys with UTAA representatives at Cuncolim Police station and conceded some of the main demands.

The order appointing Deepak Dessai as director of the Scheduled Tribe Department and the appointment of necessary staff for the department was issued. Besides, The ST Commission Chairman Pandurang Madkaikar was provided a cabin in the Minister’s Block at Porvorim.
Both the District Collectors had also issued notices prohibiting sale of tribal land to non-tribals and the Forest Committee was also agreed to be constituted with representation to UTAA in it.
The pending demands included the notifying the Scheduled Area, implementing the reservation policy, filling up the 2,442 vacant posts reserved for ST, subsidy and interest free loans to ST community and enhancing the pension to ST widows and senior citizens under the Dayanand Niridhar Social Security Scheme.
UTAA delegation was to discuss these issues with Chief Minister Digambar Kamat in the evening at 5 pm. However, violence erupted at Balli before that.
