Govt To Promote Minor Ports

The Goa government has decided to promote minor ports along the hinterland in the State under the Public Private Participation module. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held on Monday.

The Captain of Ports has been asked to identify sites for developing minor ports announced Chief Minister Digambar Kamat while briefing media persons after the cabinet meeting.

He said these ports could be developed by inviting private bidders subsequently.

The Captain of Ports is already looking after the Panjim port with not much success as the port is situated in mid waters. However, the new minor ports will probably have jetty service to facilitate better operations.

Chapora in North and a site in Canacona where the government proposes to have a marina are likely to be identified for this project along with Betul.

The State government’s decision to promote minor ports come barely a fortnight after it decided to approach the Union Ministry of Shipping to shrink the jurisdiction of Mormugao Port Trust which was notified in 1961.
