Taking cognizance of the growing demand by parents for English as a ‘medium of instruction’ in Goan schools, education Minister Babush Monserratte assured the State Legislative Assembly that the Government will take a policy decision during the current session itself.
Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of various schools had petitioned the government to have English as a ‘medium of instruction’ and the official language/mother tongue as a compulsory subject.
The Diocesan Board of Education which manages over 170 schools in the state had also made a similar demand.
This demand has come in the wake of the Right to Education (RtE) Act of the central government which makes the official language/mother tongue compulsorily the ‘medium of instruction’. All the states are expected to ratify this central act before the commencement of the next academic year.
