GPCC Re-Shuffle: Defeated MLAs & Candidates to find no favors

Expected to be executed within few weeks, the long pending re-shuffle of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) will spring a few surprises and major disappointments to several popular faces in the state-leadership. AICC senior officials have told that those political leaders defeated in the Goa Assembly Elections 2012 are not being considered for any senior position in the party affairs in the state whether it be GPCC, Goa Pradesh Youth Congress or Mahila Congress Chief.

It is learnt that the GPCC president will not be an MLA or MP but a Congress-leader who will dedicate time towards rebuilding the party from grass-root levels rather work towards furthering his own interests as an MLA or MP. This first immediate step would be the replacement of the current GPCC president Subash Shirodkar who appears to have fallen from grace with Congress high command, since the debacle of the party in the assembly election; however, the party kept its patience so as to execute its plan for Goa.

In its first step Congress has elevated a Catholic political leader from Goa Luizinho Faleiro to the number-five position in the AICC party heirachy. Clearly sending a message out to the regular Faleiro detractors in Goa that his say on national and states affairs matter. The move also indicates that the Alemao family claimed relationship with Congress has reached the abysmal and any expectation of the family members to be considered for positions such as MP ticket, Mahila Congress Chief or Youth President will be negated. While Digvijay Singh will be in-charge of Goa, on imporpant matters of growing the party at state-level, Faleiro’s expertise will come into play.

Second step was the elevation of Girish Chondankar representing the Hindu-voter base (particularly keeping in mind the Samaj equation in the state) to one of the 42 secretaries that will be closely working with Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. Chodankar say on state-matters too is expected to play a crucial role. Third step was putting Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik as secretary under Digvijay Singh to look-after Karnataka. This takes care of another large voter-base that Naik represents.

Current South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha has lost-out on a ministerial berth in this term but it is learnt that he is the only one being considered for the South Goa Lok Sabha MP ticket and will not considered for the GPCC president post.

“Stories of Godinho, Cardozo, Rodrigues or Fernandes being considered as a GPCC president representing the Catholic community are all hearsay. High command will appoint a GPCC president who will rebuild the party from grass-root and help the party secure both the Lok Sabha seats,” revealed a senior AICC official looking into Goa affairs. has also learnt the recent appointments of spokesperson at a local level by the current GPCC president would also be re-considered and in all likelihood new party spokespersons are to be appointed. Current spokesperson such as Surendra Furtado and Sudip Tamankar are expected to be relieved of their responsibilities.

Also the current coterie formed by Subash Shirodkar, Ravi Naik, Churchill Alemao loyalists in GPCC will be the most effected as AICC plans a complete re-shuffle of the entire office-bearers under the new party president.
