GUJ Condemns Gary’s Manhandling

The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) after an emergency executive committee meeting held on Tuesday, has strongly condemned the security staff of the mining firm that detained, ill-treated and man handled Gary Azavedo while he was working on a story in Caurem village.
GUJ expressed shock that such an incident occurred on the same day observed as International Freedom of Press day and pointed out that if at all the journalist had trespassed into the property, a police complaint should have been lodged rather than shoving the person in a jeep and detaining him for a long time.

GUJ has urged the government and police to take stringent action against those responsible for the act aimed at brow beating journalists, in order to protect the freedom of media while covering people’s movements and agitations.
While appreciating the prompt reaction from Inspector General of Police Sundari Nanda, GUJ President Prakash Kamat urged that she takes stringent action against those responsible for the act.
