The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday filed a charge sheet against four jailed accused in the gangrape and murder case of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in this Uttar Pradesh district.
According to officials here, the charge sheet was filed under Sections 376 D (rape), 302 (murder), 354 and 376 A, in a local SC/ST court here.
The charge sheet confirmed that the victim was gangraped and murdered by the four accused, who, along with their family members, were claiming themselves innocent.
CBI has invoked charges of gangrape and murder against Sandeep, Luvkush, Ravi and Ramu and the local court in Hathras has taken cognisance, lawyer for the accused said.
The case was registered by CBI on October 11, on request from the Uttar Pradesh government.
The Dalit woman was raped by four upper-caste men in Hathras on September 14. She died on September 29 at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, during treatment.
Much controversy was created, when the victim’s body was cremated in the dead of the night near her home on September 30.
Her family alleged they were forced by the local police to hurriedly conduct her last rites. Local police officers, however, said the cremation was carried out ‘as per the wishes of the family’.
