HC Directs Govt To Investigate & Act Against Illegal Shipyards

While disposing the public interest litigation filed against illegal shipyards operating on the banks of River Zuari in Loutolim village, the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court directed the authorities to investigate the allegation made in the petition and take necessary action.
The petition was filed by Franky Monteiro and Goa Foundation asking the court to close the illegal shipyards which were operating without the mandatory approval from the Coastal Zone Management Authority, Goa State Pollution Control Board, Town & Country Planning Board and even the local panchayat.

The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority in its affidavit said that notices were issued to the shipyards who had filed their replies following which the Deputy Collector was asked to submit a report which is awaited. The authority sought six months time to take necessary action against the illegal shipyards.
However, the division bench directed the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority to complete all formalities and take action against the violators in four months time.
