The Bombay High Court at Goa on Tuesday dismissed the petition filed by farmers from Navelim objecting to the acquisition of their fields by the government. The petitioners though stunned by the dismissal before admission, said they will examine the order and accordingly take further action.
The farmers have been objecting the government’s proposal to acquire 2.72 lakh sq mts of agricultural land to extend the Margao sewage treatment plant and also to provide a buffer zone around the plant.
Under the banner of Salpem Tollem Xetkarancho Ekvott, the farmers have been three main objections. The first being that the land sought to be acquired are actually paddy fields, secondly their livelihood depends on these fields that they cultivate and finally, such a huge area is not required.
Ganashyam Shirodkar, Chairman Goa Sewerage Development Corporation said that there should be no objections to farmers cultivating the fields after they lay the pipeline through them.
Sidharth Karapurkar of farmers group said they will examine the order first and then decide upon the next course of action.
