HC sets aside reservations of wards in 5 Municipal Councils

Panjim: The Bench of the Bombay High Court in Goa has ordered the BJP-led state government to redo the exercise of reservations of wards in five out of eleven Municipal Councils.


Order states that the notification issued by Directorate of Municipal Administration (Goa government) on February 04, 2021 reserving various wards for the upcoming municipal elections is set aside in the civic bodies of Margao, Mormugao, Mapusa, Sanguem and Quepem.


The Order further states that the election process for other municipalities should continue as per the schedule announced by State Election Commission.

State Election Commission had scheduled elections for eleven Municipal Councils and Corporation of City of Panaji on March 20.


Former Chief Minister of Goa and current Leader of Opposition, Digambar Kamat took to social media Twitter to state, “With Hon’ble High court striking down DMA Notification dated 4th February 2021 on Municipal Ward Reservations, It is Begining of End of @BJP4Goa Governments Jumla Raj with Manipulations in Electoral Polls. Let us all rise to Save Democracy.”



Former Deputy Chief Minister and President of the Goa Forward Party (GFP), Vijai Sardesai stated on social media, “Today all #Goans won the verdict of #truth. The BJP led government of @DrPramodPSawant has failed yet again to #cheat us #Goemkars. Today is a historic day. Today is a day of truth. Today marks another moment towards the end of @DrPramodPSawant oppressive reign. “
