It may be recalled that on 10th June Crime Branch officials had arrested Gitesh Naik, a contractor in connection with the illegal mining at Korgao in Pernem taluka in the property belonging to Nationalist Congress Party’s National General Secretary Jitendra Deshprabhu.
When the illegal mining came to light, Jitendra claimed to have no knowledge absolutely of the mining activity even though it was being carried out in his property.
Significantly, Jitendra was fined Rs. 1.72 crore by the Mines Department for illegal mining.
Gitesh who was arrested for illegally transporting ore was subsequently released on bail by the Trial Court. The arrest was affected after three persons – Pradeep Kakodkar, Kashinath Shetye and Ketan Govekar – complained to the courts of the alleged loss to the state exchequer to the tune of Rs. 50 crore.
