Goa Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Vijai Sardessai announced plans to host a heritage festival at Margao on the lines of the now defunct Fontainhas Festival that used to be held in Panjim.
He made this announcement at a get together held at his residence on Tuesday where prominent citizens of Margao and Fatorda along with social activists and some ministers had gathered.
Vijai revealed that his organization We For Fatorda has been discussing this proposal with Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and Tourism Minister Nilkanth Haldankar for quite some time and said that the chief minister was agreeable to such a festival.
He said the architectural marvels mostly in the form of houses in Comba, along Abade Faria Road, Old Market area, Holy Spirit Church surroundings and even Borda could be given a facelift to recreate the old and fascinating latin ambience of yesteryears.
Besides helping to preserve the heritage and heritage monuments and structures, such an activity will also give a boost to tourism, he opined.
To add a glamour quotient to the proposal Mahima Chowdhury from the Hindi film industry who was present for the party also extended her support to this idea. “Goa with its beauty that has been exploited and it is important to remember one’s culture and heritage in the wake of commercialization due to tourism,” she said.
