I am not a Portuguese national: Deputy Speaker Isidore Fernandes

Panjim: Reacting to the allegations based on documentary evidence put forth by RTI and Human Rights Activist Aires Rodrigues, newly elected Deputy Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly Isidore Fernandes refuted the claims saying ‘I am not a Portuguese National’.

This however is a strange statement to make considering a government document of Portugal titled Conservatoria do Registo Civil de Beja (Civil Registry of Beja) in possession of GoaChronicle it shows that the current Deputy Speaker of Goa Isidore Fernandes obtained his Portuguese Nationality on April 22nd 2014.

The Deputy Speaker Isidore Fernandes was a part of the 10 MLAs of the Congress Legislative members who had merged with the BJP recently.

Fernandes was unanimously elected to the post of the Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly.

Demanding that Isidore Fernandes immediately resign as MLA and Deputy Speaker, Adv. Rodrigues has urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to ensure that his now Deputy Speaker also forthwith refunds all the State emoluments unlawfully and so deviously pocketed by him since April 2014 after obtaining Portuguese Nationality.

Adv. Rodrigues has further stated that if the Goa government does not act swiftly and deterrently against Isidore Fernandes within seven days he would be constrained to move the Court.
