“Presently, I am not affiliated to any politician or any political party. I want to contest elections as peoples’ candidate,” said Dr. Hubert Gomes, addressing a press conference in Margao on Thursday.
Speaking about the forthcoming elections, he said while he will definite contest, whether it will be as an independent or as a party candidate will be decided by a committee of eminent persons from the constituency that will be constituted shortly.
When asked about joining any party, he said, “I have no plans as yet. It all depends on the committee. Few days back when my photographs with Micky Pacheco appeared in the local newspapers, people got a notion that I am associated with him, which is not true. But I don’t rule out any possibilities.”
“I have not appointed any spokesperson. There are rumours that I will not contest the elections. Come what may, I am definitely going to contest,” he said.
“I have a three-point agenda for the elections – make up for what we have lost in past 49 years, improve healthcare in Benaulim and youth empowerment”, he said adding that they have already started with healthcare activities by giving free medicines for the poor.
Dr. Gomes stressed on safeguarding environment and said, “today’s leader should address garbage issue very seriously. If garbage is thrown anywhere, it becomes a breeding place for mosquitoes which further leads to health problems like malaria and dengue.”
Terming himself a leader of people, he said he would concentrate more on community service rather than politics.
