INX media case: SC junks Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea

New Delhi, Sep 5 (GCCurrentAffairs) The Supreme Court on Thursday nixed former finance minister P Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea in INX media money laundering case.

“We are dismissing the petition filed by petitioner (P Chidambaram) in the present case,” a bench, headed by Justice R Bhanumathi, said in a jam-packed courtroom.

“Granting of anticipatory bail at the initial stage may frustrate the investigation. It’s not a fit case to grant anticipatory bail,’ the bench added.

Reading out the judgement, the Top Court also said the Economic offences stand at different footing and has to be dealt with a different approach.

The order essentially means that Chidambaram may have to go either to Tihar under judicial custody or remanded to ED’s custody for interrogation.

The Congress leader’s CBI custody is expiring today and he would be produced before the Rouse Avenue Court.

He is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for his alleged involvement in the case.
