South Goa Collector G P Naik who was to be suspended for mishandling the situation at Balli on Wednesday which resulted in the death of two tribal youth, got himself admitted to a private clinic in Margao on Sunday claiming to be suffering from high blood pressure.
His family members and friends claim that Naik was upset and disturbed with Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s announcement that he would be suspended and attributed that to his medical condition.
Naik is reportedly admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a private clinic in Margao and hence the suspension notice could not be served on him.
However, there are quite a few who look at Naik’s illness with skepticism and say that it is ploy to bid for time to retire from service without getting the suspension notice as he is due to retire on 31st May 2011.
In fact, Naik’s continuation in government service has also been questioned and it was alleged that he had submitted forged birth certificate as his classmates in school in college who were in government service and hailing from his home town of Cuncolim, retired from government service years ago.
Naik who hails from Cuncolim is reported to have used the fact that Chief Minister Digambar Kamat’s wife Asha also hails from the same town, to his advantage to curry various favours and it is believed that even the assurance to suspend him may be a mere eyewash.
