IT department initiates probe in Rs 26 lakh caught at Dabolim airport

Goa Income Tax department has launched a probe ahead of the March 3 Assembly polls to trace Rs 26 lakh seized by from a passenger at Dabolim airport, a top official said today.

The IT authorities are probing whether the cash was brought in the coastal state to spend it during the forthcoming polls, said Joint Chief Electoral Officer Narayan Navti. Election Commission is closely monitoring the political activities in the poll-bound state and is keeping a hawk’s eye on airport, railway station and state borders to curb flow of money.

K Shivanna, who hails from Sawantwadi in Maharashtra, was apprehended along with the cash haul when he had landed at the airport last month, he said.

According to EC, any transaction beyond Rs 2.5 lakh would be under its surveillance. Even, the banks have been asked to monitor and report withdrawal or deposit of the said amount.
