Sunday 24th October 2010 will be long remembered in the sporting annals of Goa as on this day to major events related to sports take place. While Goans eagerly await the results of the much hyped elections of Goa Football Association’s new Managing Committee, the world will be watching the third and final One Day International Cricket match between India and Australia being played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda.
Given the fact that football is the passion of Goans, most of them are eagerly watching the elections of the new managing committee of GFA where leading industrialist Srinivas Dhempo is vying for the top post of this organization against Peter Vaz.
While Srinivas leads one of the leading football clubs in the country, Peter is chief of Sporting Clube de Goa which has won the hearts of sports lovers in Goa particularly since he has built up this club from scratch. And if Srinivas is a leading businessman having inherited the Dempo empire from his forefathers, Peter has carved out his own business enterprise on his own terms and conditions.
Although it was presumed that Srinivas would have a cakewalk at these elections, Peter has put up a truly spirited fight and observers predict that it would be a neck and neck finish.
On the other hand, the bright and sunny morning brought cheers to the thousands of cricket fans who had descended on Goa to watch the last One Day International match between India and Australia. The incessant rains in the last few days had cast a gloom over the Fatorda stadium as till Saturday evening there were doubts whether the match would be played or called off.
The stadium management did not take any chances and kept the ground covered as soon as it started raining and this effort bore fruit.
