CID/Crime Branch finally on Tuesday evening, booked Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) General Secretary Jitendra Deshprabhu and others for illegal mining in Korgao village of Pernem Taluka.
The case was registered following a directive from the Judicial Magistrate First Class after activists Pradeep Kakodkar, Kashinath Shetye and Ketan Govekar moved the courts against the police inaction in the matter.
The activists had alleged that Deshprabhu along with others had cheated the State government to the tune of Rs. 50 crore.
Besides Deshprabhu, Director of Industries and Mines, Director of Transport, Chairman of Goa State Pollution Control Board, Chief Conservator of Forests , some other officials of these departments and the village panchayat of Korgao.
Interestingly, though officials of the Department of Industries and Mines has claimed that Home Minister Ravi Naik’s son was awarded the contract to operate the mine illegally, the First Information Report filed by the police does not name him.
Deshprabhu was fined Rs. 1.72 crore for the illegal mining and he in turn while admitting that the operations were carried out in his property claimed that he was not involved in the mining activity.
