Nationalist Congress Party Secretary and former MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu has been asked to pay a fine of Rs 1.72 crore for illegally extracting iron ore from a property under Survey No. 299/0 of Corgao Village in Pernem taluka, according to reports in the local media.
According to the notice issued by the Mines Department, 52,360 metric tonnes of Iron ore was extracted from the site of which 15,000 metric tonnes was lying at the site when the inspection was carried out.
Significantly, the ore was being loaded in trucks during the night.
According to land survey records, the property in question is registered in the name of Raghuraj Vassudev Deshprabhu and the Public Works Department.
The department had come under flak during the last assembly session for not taking action against Deshprabhu’s illegal mining activities in the taluka.
Cipriano Died In Custody: Report
The preliminary report in Cipriano Fernandes’ death case which has been submitted to the National Human Rights Commission and also the Goa State Police Complaints Authority (GSPCA) concedes that it was a custodial death.
The report submitted by Superintendent of Police, North Arvind Gawas besides giving the chronology of events, concedes that there was gross misconduct by the police personnel involved in the case.
Besides being accused of assaulting Cipriano in the jeep and the lock-up after he was picked up from his cousin’s house at Porvorim, his family members have also accused the police of not taking the deceased for a medical examination even when it was asked for.
Cipriano who was arrested on 7th January evening was kept in the police lock that night and late next morning was admitted to Goa Medical College hospital at Bambolim where he died in the early hours of 9th January.
The GSPCA had taken suo motto cognizance of the incident after it was reported in the local media and asked for a report.
