The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Pernem directed police to book National Congress Party’s National Secretary Jitendra Deshprabhu for illegal mining along with officials involved in the scam. Police have been directed to register the First Information Report within 24 hours.
The order came in the wake of a complaint lodged in February this year by activists Pradeep Kakodkar, Kashinath Shetye and Ketan Govekar alleging that the NCP office bearer, who incidentally is also the biggest landlord in Pernem, had cheated the State exchequer to the tune of Rs. 50 crore.
Although Jitendra admitted that the land where the illegal mining was done belongs to him, he asserted that he was not involved in the mining operations. The Department of Mines had slapped a fine of Rs. 1.72 crore on Jitendra for illegally extracting iron ore.
According to the mining department officials, the ore was being extracted by a son of Goa’s top politician.
