Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Atul Johri was arrested on Tuesday evening after allegations of sexual harassment were levelled against him by students.
Delhi Commission for Women chairperson, Swati Maliwal, weighed in for the student-protestors. She tweeted on Monday,’ Sexual assault of nine girls is extremely shocking. The man appears to be a serial offender. Even more shocking is the fact that Delhi Police is yet to arrest the accused. DCW is issuing notices in the matter. We are in support of the brave complainants.’
Prof Johri was held on charges of sexual harassment after students lodged complaints against him at Vasant Kunj Police Station on Thursday night. He was detained and questioned by Delhi Police.
Multiple FIRs were lodged against Prof Johri in the case.
‘Eight girls have recorded their statements before magistrate,’ sources said.
Prof Johri, the sources said, was taken to Patiala House Court for custody,
Scores of students on Monday took out a protest march from JNU to Vasant Kunj Police Station demanding the arrest of Prof Johri.
During the protest, a clash broke out between the police and agitating students.
A protesting student said, ‘We don’t have any intention to engage in a scuffle with the police. We want that the police should arrest the accused professor.’
