New Delhi: A Special court in Pathakot has convicted six people who were accused of gang-raping and murdering eight-year old girl, Asifa Bano, in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir in early 2018.
The judgement was pronounced amid heightened security in Pathankot and Kathua.
The convicted include village head Sanji Ram, two special police officers Deepak Khajuria and Surender Verma and Head constable Tilak Raj.
One accused the Vishal, son of Sanji Ram has been acquitted.
The incident had evoked huge anger across the country with people demanding justice for the victim, who was gang-raped.
Asifa belonged to the nomad Bakarwal community. She was missing and later the child’s mutilated body was found in a forest area.
The crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police on April 9 filed in court their chargesheet in the case of abduction, rape and murder of 8-year-old Gujjar girl of Kathua district.
Seven persons were accused of the crime in the chargesheet. The eighth accused is a juvenile.
