Margao: Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat in Monday said that the state government as well as the centre should take note of Goan Seafarers’ plight who are stranded on the ship after the outbreak of Corona Virus.
In a statement, he said there were shocking reports of Goan Seafarers who were stranded on the ship and left at the mercy of god by their employers after the outbreak of Corona Virus.
“They are not allowed to disembark the ship nor provided with medical help and other facilities. Many countries are not allowing the Ships to dock into their ports. The families of these stranded Goan seafarers have approached me expressing concerns about the fate of their loved ones. I have spoken to Union Ayush Minister Shripad Naik and asked him to take up the issue with the Prime Minister of India during the Cabinet Meeting to be held today. I have also urged NRI Commissioner Narendra Sawaikar to immediately take steps to ensure safety of these Seafarers by taking up the issue with Ministry of External Affairs,” he said.
Mr Kamat said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant should take note of the serious situation and act accordingly.
“It is also the duty of Government of Goa to give proper information to the families about the whereabouts of the Seafarers with details such as present location of their respective ships. The Seafarers have positively contributed to the economic growth and foreign exchange earnings of the State. It is the duty of the Government to take pro-active steps and reach out to them with all help in this testing times,” he said.
