Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and other accused in the 2016 JNU sedition case appeared before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Patiala House Court, New Delhi on Monday after the court had taken cognizance of Delhi Police chargesheet.
Khalid was produced from jail where he is presently lodged in judicial custody in a Delhi Riots case.
Judge Pankaj Sharma proceeded to direct supply of charge sheet to the counsel of all accused persons today itself.
The Court then listed the matter listed for scrutiny of documents on April 7.
Counsel for Kanhaiya Kumar, advocate Sushil Bajaj sought Kumar’s exemption from physical appearance during that time.
The Court, however, said that such requests shall considered on a day-to-day basis.
A request was also made for shorter dates in the matter by advocate Bajaj so that the case can be concluded expeditiously.
Bail was also granted to other accused – Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayees Rasool, Basharat Ali, Khalid Basheer – who were not arrested before filing of chargesheet.
A chargesheet was filed by Delhi Police in 2019 against a total of ten person for allegedly raising “anti-national” slogans at JNU campus on Feb 2, 2016.
They are booked for commission of offences u/s 124A,143, 465, 471,147,149,120B and 323 IPC.
Summons to all accused were issued last month.
