Bengaluru, Sep 30 (GCCurrentAffairs) The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee had urged the Election Commission of India to enforce the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the 15 Assembly seats immediately, for which by-elections will be held on December 5, a statement said on Monday.
The KPCC president, Dinesh Gundu Rao, in a memorandum submitted to the ECI had objected over the ECI’s declaration that the MCC would come into effect from October last week.
Stating that the MCC should come into effect immediately after the announcement of the calendar of events to hold the by-elections, he said, “We are shocked and surprised to know the attitude of the ECI for its stand on giving effect on the dates for the commencement of the election code of conduct”.
He said that the ECI had earlier issued notification to conduct by-elections to 15 Assembly seats to be held on October 21 and for which the process of filing of nominations had been started, however the counsel of the ECI had told the Supreme Court that it had been postponed to December 5.
Alleging that the dual stand of the ECI has eroded the trust and credibility of the institution, the KPCC president opined that “the Commission’s stand has given room for doubt that it is acting at the behest of the Union Government”.
Claiming that the action of the ECI by postponing the by-elections, would destroy the very fabric of the democracy and the trust of the people, the KPCC president stated, “It would also result into losing of faith on the Commission”.
