Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram, was arrested by CBI early on Wednesday morning in connection with a corruption case.
CBI sources said a special CBI team arrested Karti at the Chennai Airport soon after his arrival from London.
Soon after he was held at the Airport, CBI authorities took Karti to a secluded destination for further questioning.
It may be recalled that, despite repeated denials by both the Senior ad Junior Chidambarams, the CBI had conducted raids at the houses and offices of Karti in four cities for allegedly receiving kickbacks from the INX media.
The Madras High Court had on February 22 allowed Karti Chidambaram to visit abroad, despite strong objections from the CBI over the pending Look Out Circulars (LoCs) against him.
Passing orders on the plea filed by Karti seeking permission to travel abroad for business purposes and to quash the LoCs, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose had directed him to inform in advance to the CBI, his travel plans, including the places of visit.
The Court also said Karti should return to India by February 28.
